Every 9 Seconds

Every 9 Seconds

Lurana Shelter Society is proud to announce the launch of their student engagement initiative, ‘EVERY 9 SECONDS.’ For the month of November, we are activating our EVERY 9 SECONDS campaign, to shine a light on the statistic that every nine seconds a woman in Canada is abused.

All local K-12 schools are invited to participate in student led fundraising projects that help to create awareness, support, and more importantly HOPE, for the women, men, and children of our city fleeing domestic violence.

Last year, a pilot project of this student engagement initiative took place between Nellie Carlson School and Lurana Shelter Society and it was a huge success. Nellie Carlson students chose to host a school wide fundraiser where they asked students and their families/guardians to donate $9 for the month of November in support of Lurana Shelter Society.

Nellie Carlson students, along with the support of their Principal, teaching staff, and parents/guardians also developed fundraising opportunities within the school including a movie night, designed and sold t-shirts, hosted hot lunch programs, etc.

Nellie Carlson School then wrapped up their Every 9 Seconds fundraising campaign celebrating their $1,661.30 raised with a Mini WE Day hosted at their school!

Your school or classroom’s participation provides the following opportunities for students:

  • Foster a sense of social responsibility to help end domestic violence in our community and that each individual student, classroom, and school’s support makes a significant impact.
  • Cultivate hope, community, and meaningful change.
  • Profile the work of students, a classroom, or a school.
  • Increase students’ confidence and build on communication, decision making and leadership skills.
  • Students will learn how to become a change makers, what it means to be a good person and citizen as well as how to collaborate and make a difference.
